KILT

How did KILT form?

B: (Bob Bellerue) KILT came out of improvisations between Raven and Bob during their 2005 double-solo WNWSW tour. Upon returning to LA we started using the band name and playing together regularly. Sandor used to sit in with us and then he came on tour with us in 2006, solidifying the lineup.

S: (Sandor GF): Yea. At some point me and Bob came up with the moniker 'DEAD WOLF BLACK' that we performed under quite a few times and I even put out a split EP and cassette with KILT. However, we felt it makes better sense to officially integrate the two projects as there are no major stylistic or philosophical differences between the two.

What is KILT expressing?

B: KILT is improvised free noise, it expresses nothing and it expresses everything. It’s not very conceptual, but it's very deep

S: Yea. For US, this is natural music. (Or rather, natural antimusic.) Absurd expressionist noise?!? It's tough to put it in words...

R: (Raven Chacon) I always think of it like amplified chamber music. Like Kronos Quartet, but meaner.

What are some social and spiritual factors that influence you?

B: freedom, chaos, gnarly food. Improvisation is an important element in what we do, there is some sense of basic structure but within that we rage wail thrash and implode.

R: For some reason, the three of us love wind instruments, horns, and heavy metal.

S: spiritual and philosophical confusion/idealism/nihilism/desperation + being poor and grumpy is certainly a big social influence for me!

What were some highlights of the last tour?

B: killer food, killer people, making physical connections to virtual acquaintances. Denton was _the_ show of the tour, killer crowd who were really present with the sound, not just partying

S: I was only present for 3 weeks of the epic Redglaer/KILT US tour, but it was pretty much all highlights all over! So many great dudes (and dudettes) though, it's such a pleasure to get acquainted with musically like-minded, easygoing peeps! The lowlights were: all too frequent brutal hangovers, the artificial nacho cheese sauce they put on my scrambled eggs at that doomed Lansing Diner by the Olson's house, all the dead deers I've seen along the freeways in the Midwest - it's a tragedy.

R: The way it worked out this time was that Sandor and I joined Bob on his epic tour at different legs, so the full trio didn't get to do any shows this time out. Next time. Rowdy times in Philly and Denver. Denton hit me hard.

Any future tour plans?

R: We try to get out and do at least 1 or 2 blocks regional shows a year. Bob and I don't live in L.A. anymore, so it's harder for us to coordinate some of our projects. We hope that the 3 of us can get our shit together and get out to Europe or somewhere sometime soon. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Sandor should go back to Hungary.

S: Yes Europa is on our minds. Maybe this coming fall.... I'd really really love to do a short Japanese tour - no solid plans yet though...
Raven's bitter 'cuz he misses L.A., so is Bob, by the way.

B: hoping to get some more releases out, and do a proper studio recording with these blokes. But yeah getting us all together ain't east

Recording?? Etc??

S: We have plenty of live archives to comb through in the unspecified future. We're busy boyz though, it will surely take some quality time, haha.

B: we're suffering under the curse of too many recordings. Good gigs don't always make good recordings

gives us some insight into your other projects...

R: Solo stuff under my own name. Some noise and other experiments, songs. Most of it is chamber music. Also, Cobra//group (aka Death Convention Singers) . A big-band of mariachero-noise. Black Guys is Alan George Ledergerber and myself. We will be in Denton in June. Where should we play? Clansman Singers = traditional Navajo singing. Sicksicksick Distro micro-label of small-town Southwest music. All are based in Albuquerque.

B: Redglaer improvised harsh-textures
Tecumseh doom-drone
Purple Pansy is myself and A. Hendricks. Sounds of household animals, amplified yard tools and fake plants
Long-term performance projects with choreographer W.Z. Gala
Anarchymoon Recordings

S: ANDORKAPPEN is my solo inhuman vokillist moniker (http://www.myspace.com/andorkappen),
I'm in a primitive black sludge metal band called HARASSOR (http://www.myspace.com/harassor),
I have a future solo necro/dead metal project called LORD TIME (I haven't recorded shit yet though, haha),
My label used to be unknown as BASTARDISED, from now still unknown as UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS (http://www.myspace.com/bastardisedrec), and I'm also in an old skool hardcore/thrash-psychobilly hybrid band called CAUSTIC HATE.
I also like to make improvised veggie stir-fries, but really, I'm a scrambled eggs specialist.

Why create?

B: good point, let's get back to sucking off the new episode of Laguna Beach Serial Killers

S: It's not really a choice for me but the essence of my existence (ugh, uhm).

R: Not really any good at anything else.

what can you tell me about "people who do noise"

B: People Who Do Noise is a documentary about noise artists in the
Portland area, produced by Adam Cornelius. it is a pretty cool
project, combining pro-quality audio and video while also being
casual and personal. most of the material was shot at Foodhole, a
defunct Portland all-ages venue. it's about half footage of the
artists performing, as well as interviews, which is kind of a rarity
in the noise world: you don't see many interviews about
process/content/motives/techniques. i helped shoot about half of
the footage, and advised Adam on the sound issues in the editing
process. He is planning a premiere in Portland in the next few
months and will eventually release it in some capacity on disc.

peoplewhodonoise.com

what are some common misconceptions of what you do?

B: that we're trying to create pain, that we're trying to induce
discomfort, miscarriages, strife. that we can't play our
instruments, that anyone can play noise. it's something i hate about festivals with a catch-all inclusive policy - all the wanker musicians who jump on the bill saying "hey i can play noise[wank
wank], look at me i don't know what i'm doing [wank] and people are
paying to watch. [squel peal bleep bloop] hey i think it's working,
everyone is walking out with their fingers in their ears."

future predictions?

R: 3" CDr on Chondritic Sound, more vinyl, non-usa tours soon.

B: fuck the future, it's pissing me off
